The Music Men an Illustrated History of Brass Bands in America, 1800-1920
Published in Paperback by Smithsonian Institution Press (February, 1988)
Authors: Margaret Hindle Hazen and Robert M. Hazen
Average review score:

Fascinating book for anyone interested in marching bands.
High School and College band students and directors will find "The Music Men" by Margaret Hindle Hazen fasincating as well as entertaining. Find out the history behind the community and professional bands, and how they have influenced the development of school bands. Great information about all the different kinds of bands from the 19th century including lots of photos. The only down side to the book is that some of the same information is presented in different chapters. However, this is the most complete book of band history I have read and I found it quite enjoyable.

Leave a legecy for your children by recording your thoughts.
The immortal devotional classic in the original language. Conveniently located section for recording your thoughts and reactions to OC's insight in the margins. Larger than normal print makes reading easier. I leave it open on my desk to get me started each day. Nothing more needs to be said about My Utmost..., the unique thing about this version is the space given for keeping a journal. This is an excellent gift new, but also as a gift to a child or grandchild years from now to catalop your spiritual journey for those that follow.

A grim reminder of the 'other' atomic bomb city
This compilation presents an extensive photographic record of the immediate aftermath of the bombing of Nagasaki with accompanying text. Published on the 50th anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, it shows the horrendous aftermath of the bombing through reprints of digitally restored negatives from pictures taken just a few days after the critical juncture in history. The photos are accompanied by bilingual text in Japanese and English, including an interview with the photographer, a work of fiction, and extensive biographical and chronological materials. The graphic contents may not be suitable for certain readers.

Easy access to the National Historic Landmarks
Organized by state and then by county, this book offers an easy and quick way to find out about the properties that have been defined as our national landmarks. The pithy descriptions of each property are clever, articulate, and avoid formula writing, keeping the reader moving from one to another of the various entries. The photographs and occasional drawings are large and of high quality, providing a valuable complement to the text. In addition to the index by property name, there is a general index by subject matter, making it easy to find properties related by subject, regardless of location.

Not Knowing Where
Published in Paperback by Christian Literature Crusade (March, 1999)
Author: Oswald Chambers
Average review score:

Spiritual Journey
I have read this book at the beginning of the year for the past 6 years. I find that as Oswald takes me on a journey through the lives of the patriarchs (Noah, Abraham, Jacob, and Joseph)in the book of Genesis, it is actually a portrait my life. All of the weaknesses, blunders, fears, failures, trials, temptations, and disappointments the patriarchs faced, I face them as well. Yet, Oswald makes it very clear that the God who initiated the relationship with these patriarchs also took the responsibility for keeping them. This book gives me so much comfort because it makes very clear the intimacy God desires in a relationship with men. Moreover, he does not want our weaknesses, failures, blunder, etc. to be a hinderance in our relationship with him, but a stepping stone into deeper intimacy; and indication of how much we really need him. I think this book must be read meditatively, and with a heart seeking intimacy with God.

Author: Mark L. Chambers
Average review score:

An excellent book!
This is a funny, well-written book with a great companion CD-ROM... for once, you get all the tools demonstrated in the text (and more). I found the chapters on morphing and 3D animation particularly interesting. Even built a 3D logo for my web page in 10 minutes, using the software on the CD-ROM. If you're looking for a comprehensive book that covers every angle of Web animation, buy this one!

Old Bullion Benton, Senator from the New West: Thomas Hart Benton, 1782-1858.
Published in Textbook Binding by Russell&Russell Pub (June, 1970)
Author: William Nisbet, Chambers
Average review score:

Outstanding political history of the early to mid-19th C.
This biography of Thomas Hart Benton is an outstanding look at not only the man, but the politics of an era. While many are familiar with the names and actions of Clay, Webster, and Calhoun, few are so familiar with the fourth member of this "quadumvirate." Benton was every bit as eloquent, influential, and powerful as his contemporaries, but his contributions seem to have been overshadowed in popular conception by his fellow Democrats, Andrew Jackson and Stephen Douglass. For the first time we see a man driven to represent his adopted state (Missouri), his penchant for engaging in duels (he once shot Andrew Jackson who carried the bullet for twenty years), and his sincere desire to aid the working man in the expansion of the new West. Benton's thirty-plus year career spans from the age of the founding fathers to the beginnings of the sectional crisis of the Civil War. This work is a must read for those interested in the politics of the Jacksonian era which led to the Civil War.
